From Pokhara, our adventure leads on the main trail to Ghorepani and at Poon Hill for the fantastic panorama of 180° wide-angle views of Mid West Himalayan range of mountains with striking sunrise views and walking within the pristine forest of tall rhododendron and magnolia tree lines. In spring this whole areas turns magic into a natural garden when wild-flowers in full bloom with the backdrop of high snow-capped peaks.

Soon our adventure leads away from the main trekking trail into isolated areas at Kopra ridge with fabulous close views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna range with Annapurna Fang or Varah Shikhar Himal, and then with optional excursion to Khayar holy lake where auspicious time in the month of August, a huge religious fair takes place and local pilgrims visits here for a holy dip and a bath on this icy glacial pond to relinquishes the sin of a hundred lifetime. After a great and enjoyable time at Kopra Ridge and Khayar Lake, our adventure completes with a walk downhill to reach at Pokhara through wonderful Gurung village of Tadapani and Ghandruk, a short drive to Pokhara ends our fabulous adventure Khopra Ridge & Khayar Lake Trekking.

Guideline Itinerary:

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

Day 02: Drive to Pokhara 820m (220 k.m) – 08 hrs.

Day 03: Drive to Nayapul (trek point) and trek to Tikhedhunga 1,440m – 04 hrs.

Day 04: Trek to Ghorepani 2,860m – 06 hrs.

Day 05: Hike to Poonhill and trek to Swata 2,200 m – 05 hrs.

Day 06: Trek to Shistibung 3,000 m – 05 hrs.

Day 07: Trek to Kopra Ridge 3,870 m – 03 hrs.

Day 08: Free day at Kopra Ridge for an optional hike to holy Khayar Lake.

Day 09: Trek to Dobato 3,420 m – 05 hrs.

Day 10: Trek to Ghandruk 1,940 m – 05 hrs.

Day 11: Trek to Nayapul and drive to Pokhara – 06 hrs.

Day 12: Drive back to Kathmandu and transfer to respective hotels.

Day 13: Final departure.

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

Your first impression of arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport is an experience in itself. But don’t be worried by the apparent confusion as your airport representative will be waiting to welcome you with your name written on a placard. Depending on traffic, you will be at your hotel within 20 minutes or so.

You have time to relax and enjoy the ambience and comfort of the hotel until your evening Group Meeting. This is when we collect your insurance details and discuss how the trip will run for the coming days. After the meeting, we go for our first group dinner. Your tour leader will take you to a traditional Nepali restaurant in Thamel.

Day 02: Drive to Pokhara 950m - 08 hrs journey distance 220 k.m.
Morning travel by private coach or in tourist bus (depending upon the size of the group) with an exciting overland drive on main Kathmandu to Pokhara highway, leading through Himalayan foothills, on reaching Pokhara transfer to respective hotels by the beautiful Phewa Lake with an afternoon free for short walks. (Options by Air 30 minutes scenic flight to Pokhara).

Day 03: Drive to Nayapul (trekking point) and trek to Tikhedhunga 1,440 m - 04 hrs.
Starting our wonderful country walks to Kopra Ridge & Khayar Lake trekking with about two hours drive to Nayapul and Bhirethati villages, located near the river Modi where our first day walk starts past several farm villages with scenic waterfalls then a short gradual climb for few hours to reach at Tikhedhunga for overnight stop in the comfort of nice lodge after a wonderful and interesting walks of few hours.

Day 04: Trek to Ghorepani 2,850m - 07  hrs.
The morning starts with a climb to a series of stone steps for an hour to Ulleri village, a moderate size Gurung village of traditional Nepali hill villages with slated roofs. From here walk leads to a slow climb into pristine and cool rhododendron, pine forest area to reach Ghorepani village, located on a high ridge within beautiful rhododendron trees. Ghorepani village mostly inhabited by Poon of Magar tribe, a famous and popular place for Poon Hill view top an hour hike uphill.

Day 05: Hike to Poonhill and trek to Sauta 2,200m - 05 hrs.
Early morning before the sunrise hike to Poon Hill viewpoint for stunning views of the sunrise over the range of mountains from world 7th highest Dhaulagiri-10th highest Annapurna includes world 8th highest Manaslu with towering Machhapuchhre peak “Fish Tail”.

After an exciting and marvelous time with memorable views from Poon Hill, return to Ghorepani and continue descend into green forest of rhododendron for an hour to Chitre village and then descend to a fresh stream a short climb brings you at nice farm village in Sauta for overnight stop, away from the mainstream trekking trails with marvellous views of Dhaulagiri mountains.

Day 06: Trek to Shistibung 3,000 m - 05 hrs.

Starting morning walk through farm fields and scattered villages, leading into lovely rhododendron and bamboo forest, then a climb into woodlands following the route to Khair ridge, with an uphill through meadow and summer pastures to Chistibung for an overnight stop, a, a small place of few huts serving as tea-houses.

Day 07: Trek to  Khopra Ridge 3,870 m - 03 hrs.
Morning walk for few hours leading to our destination at Kopra ridge, from here on gaining altitude after leaving the tree lines for short alpine bushes and shrubs, around this place chances of seeing some wildlife like Himalayan Thar, Danphe Pheasant (National Bird of Nepal).

2-3 hours of good climb brings at overnight stop at Kopra ridge, a scenic spot with amazing views of surrounding landscapes and Mt. Dhaulagiri massive range, Vara-Shikar (Annapurna Fang), Annapurna South which towers from this wonderful spot.

Day 08: At Kopra Ridge for a day hike to holy Khayar lake.

A great spot for rest day and excursion to holy Khayar Lake located at 4,247 m. which is a long and tough hike and worth the views, a holy site with a religious festival held annually around the month of August and September.Villagers from surrounding area visit on the pilgrimage to offer prayers and dip in the lake. 

Day 09: Trek to Dobato 3,420 m - 05 hrs.

After a great time at Kopra ridge & holy Khair Lake, morning walk leads to a long descend through pasture lands in the midst of rhododendron forest, and then back into tree lines to our overnight stop at Dobato, a summer pasture a grazing land for the local Sheppard’s with striking views of Annapurna and Mt. Machapuchhre.

Day 10: Trek to Ghandruk 1,951m - 04 hrs.

Today a moderate walk with much downhill to Ghandruk village through the forest, with views of snow-capped mountains; a pleasant walk leads to Ghandruk village for an overnight stop after walking past Tadapani village on the main trekking trail.

Ghandruk, largest Gurung villages around Annapurna region, the menfolk of Ghandruk village have the long tradition of supplying some of the finest soldiers in the Gorkha Regiment to both British and Indian armies.

Day 11:  Trek to Nayapul / Birethati 1,000 m and drive to Pokhara - 04 hrs.
After a pleasant overnight at Ghandruk with wonderful mountains views, our last day of this great trip leads into warmer areas of rice fields and terraces overlooking magnificent views of massive Himalayan range of mountains, an hour walk downhill to Bhirethati village and at Nayapul on the road head of Baglung-Pokhara, after getting into a vehicles few hour drives brings you beautiful and scenic Pokhara after a great and wonderful time up in the high mountains.

Day 12: Drive back to Kathmandu.
Morning a scenic drive to back Kathmandu with grand memories of this fantastic and exciting  Kopra Ridge & Khayar Lake trekking, an interesting six hour brings you back in Kathmandu with an afternoon free at leisure for shopping souvenirs.

Day 13: International departure homeward bound.
Your last day in amazing Nepal in the land of Himalayan wonders, after wonderful experience and fond memories of Kopra Ridge & Khayar Lake Trekking around great Annapurna Himalaya, our staff transfer you to the airport as per your time for an international flight for your final departure towards homeward bound.

We will be staying at the M hotel in Kathmandu,  in Pokhara and teahouses during the trek. All accommodations are on the twin-shared basis. Single supplement will be served on request and will cost an additional USD 350. Awesome Nepal Treks will arrange rooms with attached washrooms; however, teahouses in some places only have shared washing and toilet facilities. Also, note that single rooms are readily available in Kathmandu and the trekking regions at the lower elevation but it might be difficult to find them at higher elevations.


Breakfast will be served in Kathmandu and Pokhara and all meals will be served during the trek. Breakfast will be taken in the same place we stay for the night. Similar arrangements can also be made for dinner. Lunch will be taken en route to the next destination. There will also be welcome and farewell dinners hosted by Awesome Nepal Treks.

Physical Condition & Experience Requirements

This is moderate trek suitable for passionate walkers with the ability to walk at least 5-7 hours a day with a light day pack. Walking in higher altitudes is more physically demanding than walking in lower altitudes; however, if we are in excellent health with average physical fitness and have a positive attitude, self confidence and strong determination, we can accomplish this trek successfully. Exercising and jogging regularly for some weeks prior to the trip is a good idea to enhance our strength and stability. Past hiking experience would be an asset but no technical skill is required for this trip. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood diseases are required to consult their doctor before taking the trip. It is also advised that you inform Awesome Nepal Treks about the medical condition before booking the trek.

Best Time to Travel

Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) are the best months for this trip. Although this trip can be taken during winter, the cold temperature might not be suitable for everyone.

The following are what we advise you obtain in the way of equipment and gear before trekking in Nepal, and are meant to keep you mobile and comfortable in a range of expected weather conditions. Trekking gear can be rented or purchased in Kathmandu/Pokhara at cheaper prices, remember Nepal is the home of Mount Everest, there is plenty of choices and our staff can assist you with the necessary arrangements. Except for your day pack, all luggage will be carried by porters. There is an allowance of 33lbs/15kg per person. Additional personal items not needed for the trekking portion of the trip can be checked in the hotel’s storage room for no extra cost.
